When was the program founded?

Blacksburg Clothing Shoppe is a program of New River Community Action, Inc. (NRCA). Since 1965, Community Action Agencies are well-known proponents of self-sufficiency. “A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out” is our motto. Blacksburg Clothing Shoppe works specifically with Head Start, a program of NRCA.

What is the mission of the organization?

We strive to achieve our purpose through community organization and empowerment, i.e., helping local communities to recognize and alleviate their own poverty conditions.
Each year, New River Community Action serves over 12,000 individuals in the New River Valley through a variety of these additional programs:

SHARE helps people to expand the value of their food purchase in exchange for service to the community through low-cost food packages. SHARE is available to everyone, regardless of income.

Emergency Assistance and Food Banks assists to meet the emergency needs of those in financial crisis. NRCA also sponsors programs to provide assistance with home improvement, seasonal holiday items and income tax preparation.

Homeless Intervention Program prevents or alleviates homelessness by providing no interest loans for mortgages and temporary rent grants.

Children’s Health Improvement Partnership provides families with children age 7 and under access to primary health care, case management and parent education.

Cars Program provides qualified participants with vehicles through a low-cost purchase program or loans to repair their own vehicles.

Head Start provides children with pre-school education, access to social services, preventative health and nutrition building a solid foundation for learning. Family-focused services emphasize parent involvement.

Child Care Scholarship Fund provides assistance to parents in Radford City and Montgomery and Floyd Counties to work or continue their education or job training.

As we have said before Blacksburg Clothing Shoppe works specifically with Head Start.

Mission Statement: "NRCA Head Start's mission is to maximize the strengths of families, their health and well-being, and the social skills of children."

Head Start is a federally-funded preschool program which offers comprehensive developmental services to children 3-5 years of age. Children with special needs comprise at least ten percent of the enrollment. The primary components of Head Start are education, social services, preventative health and nutrition. The program focuses on the entire family, and includes parent involvement as a fundamental part of Head Start . Classroom-based and home-based options provide each child with a solid foundation for learning. Transportation is provided.

In addition to the educational opportunities for children, Head Start provides many individualized educational skill and involvement opportunities for parents, included among the many avenues are literacy classes, parenting classes, educational and employment training opportunities within and outside Head Start, and parent meetings. Also, parents may serve as representatives on Policy Council, which is the governing body of the Head Start Program.

Over 300 children currently receive services through Head Start centers located throughout the New River Valley . Contact the Head Start administrative office or the local New River Community Action office in your area for more information.
